Muslim scholar Azyumardi Azra received an honorary degree "Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)" from the British Queen Elizabeth II.
The award was given because Azyumardi considered to contribute significantly to understanding processes of interreligious or Interfaith Understanding, overcoming public misconceptions about the movements of radicalism and extremism. This is a very positive influence in the relationship betwen Jakarta and London and in the international arena.
"This award is something extraordinary and the first time," said Martin Hatfull, British Ambassador to Indonesia.
