Leaders, Courage, and Change

By: Adjie Suradji

There are two types of smart leaders are leaders only intelligent and smart leader who can bring change.

To create a change (in the positive sense), not very intelligent leader is needed because sometimes it can inhibit the courage of intelligence. The courage to be an important factor in leadership characteristics, including the courage to make decisions and deal with risk. Leadership characterized by risk takers contrary to populist leadership traits. Populist leaders do not dare to take risks, working with money, power, and populist political or other imaging.

Indonesia already has five former presidents and presidents each produce their own amendments. Soekarno bring big change for this nation. Followed Soeharto, Habibie, Wahid, and Megawati.

Soekarno may have forgotten, but not with the title of Proclaimers. Soeharto and the Father of Development and improvement of social economic life of the people. Habibie with technology. Gus Dur to pluralism and egaliterism. Megawati as the foundation stone of democracy, queen of democracy, because of the five ex-RI-1, which ended his term of office without confusion. The others, no matter how great his service to the nation, there is just resignation that made them are not elegant.

Unfortunately, until the sixth president (SBY), there are bad things that apparently has not changed, namely the corrupt elites of this country. Will corruption be a lasting legacy? SBY's time to answer. The slogan that was carried in a political campaign, the issue of "Together We Can" (2004) and "Continue" (2009), should be implemented proportionately.

That is, if the SBY government intends to eradicate corruption, should fiat justitia pereat Mundus-law must be upheld, even though the world should perish (Ferdinand I, 1503-1564). Not enough to strengthen the law (Commission, Court, Court Corruption, KY, until the Task Force Combating the Mafia), corruption is lost. More precisely, as if lost. Reality, the law with all perkuatannya in a new country called Indonesia was only able to make the various provisions of law, but was unable to enforce.

Quid leges sine moribus (Rome)-what does it mean if not accompanied by the law of morality? What is the meaning of law with so many officials perkuatannya if the moral is low, depraved, and minded thieves, liars, and lazy?

Courage
Borrowing Bill Newman's theory about the essential elements of leadership, which distinguishes a true leader with a common manager is the courage (The 10th Law of Leadership). Courage must be based on a view that is believed to be true without any doubt and are willing to accept whatever risk. A leader without courage is not a true leader. Courage can arise from the vision and commitment to fully rely on the belief that fighting for the truth.

Courage comes from a strong personality, while doubts come from a shaky personality. If courage is more to consider aspects beyond the self interest of the safety-leader-doubt people's interests more important aspects of the leader's own self-preservation.

Correlation with the courage to combat corruption, SBY selected more than 60 percent of people actually still lead such as the leaders who once lead.

Indeed, naturally, the individual or organization will generally be conservative or do not want change when it was at the peak position and situation fun. However, in the context of an increasingly corrupt menggurita, the remaining question, whether SBY until 2014 was able to bring this country really free from corruption?

More substantive question: whether SBY remains on the commitment of the changes? Or is it the idea of change that was launched (2004) only lived because a campaign slogan of unpreparedness accept the risks of change? Finally, whether SBY can be regarded as a leader who has the type of leadership is consistent in the sense of strong character himself, dared to take risky decisions, or even run a populist leadership with all its imagery?

Indonesia needs a visionary leader. Leader with a big dream, dare to pay the price, and effective, with a supple bureaucracy. There are no leaders without vision and no vision without awareness of the changes. Change is inevitable. Therefore, every individual, organization, and the nations that grow will always be marked by significant changes. In this world nations have been born a few leaders of character for his country and bring change, courage to take risky decisions for the welfare of its people. They are President Evo Morales (Bolivia), Ahmadinejad (Iran), and Hugo Chavez (Venezuela).

Indonesia should be better. Therefore, hopefully the rest of the leadership-by-second wave of reform jargon of SBY can provide illumination (enlightenment), meaning that the declaration of the eradication of corruption is not just political rhetoric to keep the commitment to building its image. We hope, BLBI, Lapindo, Century Bank, and the behavior of state administrators who like stealing, lying, and laziness will not be a lasting legacy of this country. Once again, all the Indonesian people still hope that the President could bring significant change to this country.
